It seems like once a woman gets pregnant there are a million things that she will find on the „do-not do“ list. It can be overwhelming to anyone, it is a drastic change in their lives. Pregnancy is a drastic change, and there are do-not lists for a very good reason. It is all to protect the health and well-being of mom and her baby. The aim is always to have a healthy baby at the end of a pregnancy and a mom who can care for him or her.
Most women are nervous in the first trimester, and understandably so as this is when the rate of pregnancy loss is the highest. They follow all of the rules very closely and are sure to do everything their doctor tells them to do. Once this phase passes, women are a little more lenient as they become more confident in their pregnancy.
This is also due to the second trimester being the ‘easiest’ trimester. Sure, it is still tough and long, but it is generally the time when women feel the best throughout their whole pregnancy. Then comes the third trimester. This is the most tiring and uncomfortable part of pregnancy, but women can take joy in the fact that it is almost over. That she will have her little baby in her arms very soon.
However, there are things that mom should still NOT do when she is in her third trimester. There are things that have stayed dangerous, and then there are things that mom was doing that she will have to stop.
20 The Tub Is Getting Too Hot
It is tempting to want to get in a nice hot bath, or even better a hot tub, to relieve some of that pain and pressure. This is dangerous and should not be done. It is not advised for a woman to take a hot bath at any point in their pregnancy, but especially not in the third trimester. Laying in hot water for too long can raise mom’s internal temperature and can be dangerous for the baby and may even start labour prematurely.
19 Stop Holding Anything That Is Too Heavy (Including Kids)
A lot of women are weary of carrying anything heavy when they are pregnant, and it doesn’t matter how far along they are. Unless directed by your doctor, this is not really an issue until mom has entered into her third trimester. Towards the end of the pregnancy, the muscles in a woman’s body can become weak due to hormones that are causing them to relax.
It is also going to put more strain on your back than is already there and no one wants to risk injuring themselves more when their back already hurts. If this is mom’s second pregnancy and she has a toddler running around she may be nervous about constantly picking them up. It is best to talk to your doctor about this and see if you can get anyone to help you with these tasks.
18 Pregnancy Means No Contact Sports
This one may seem like a given, and that it shouldn’t need to be said. Common sense is not so common anymore, so we want to put every little thing on this list that may be a possibility. There are no circumstances where any woman in their third trimester should be playing contact sports. We are not even sure there is ever a time when pregnant when a woman should partake in such activities.
The risk of injury in the third trimester from a hit to the stomach is much more severe than any other time in the pregnancy. There is less cushion in the womb due to the size of the baby, so they are not as protected as they are earlier in the pregnancy.
17 Big Meals
Food and pregnancy has such a love/hate relationship. Women who are pregnant will experience a lot of food cravings and food aversions. There are foods she must have right away, and then there are foods that will have her running to the bathroom at just the sight of. This is all normal. It is advised that women eat healthy when they are pregnant, and that they do need to eat slightly more, however this should not be done in the last trimester.
Due to the growing baby, the stomach has been squished and it is not able to hold the same amount as it once was able to. If mom eats large meals in the third trimester, it can make her very uncomfortable and can even cause her to be sick. It is always better to eat smaller, more frequent meals.
16 Put The Stiletto Heels Away
When a woman is in her third trimester, she also may start to feel off-balance a lot as she is trying to compensate for the added weight on the front. If she wears high heels this may put her at a higher risk of falling. A fall in the third trimester can be very dangerous and should be avoided.
15 Put Some Adventures On Hold
Along with the contact sports, it is also a good idea for mom to take it easy when it comes to adventure activities. There are a lot of people out there who love going on a good adventure. Whether this be scuba diving, surfing, skydiving or even bungee-jumping. These all should be stopped in the third trimester. The chances are that mom has been told to stop these activities as soon as she got pregnant, but they can be very dangerous near the end of the pregnancy.
It is also likely that a woman may completely lose interest in activities such as these when she is pregnant. Normally, the first priority for mom will always be the health and well-being of her baby so she will avoid any and all activities that may put this in jeopardy.
14 Flying Is A No
There is a new fad going around called a “babymoon.” This is when mom and dad go off on a vacation when they are expecting. It is a way to celebrate and have a final period of rest and relaxation before the baby comes. Some see this as a great idea, while others see it as a waste of money. If you are someone who wants to do this, then you need to make sure that you do this before your third trimester.
Most doctors and airlines will not let mom travel in their third trimester. Road trips may be OK, but flying is going to be off limits. This is not because being in the air causes any harm to the baby, it is because they do not want you to give birth while in the air or in a foreign country.
13 Don’t Push It With New Workouts
This is another one that is not down right forbidden, but women will want to take it easy. The normal rule when it comes to exercising when pregnant is that if a woman was doing it before she became pregnant, then she is fine to continue. When you are pregnant it is not the time to take up running or lifting weights for the first time.
Even a woman who has been working out before and during her pregnancy may want to start taking it easy in the third trimester. This is again due to the hormonal weakened muscles and the normal aches and pains that accompany the third trimester. It may be a better idea to take up yoga or something in lieu of any hardcore fitness.
12 Chores Are Limited!
It may seem like we are taking away all the fun out of pregnant women’s lives, but this is a good one. It is best to avoid any hardcore cleaning in the third trimester. This isn’t due to cleaning chemicals, even though they are good to steer clear of. It is more important for your body to take it easy in these last few months. Bending and crawling around making sure your house is clean is going to put added stress on an already stressed body.
This may be difficult for a lot of women as their nesting kicks in. Nesting is an almost uncontrollable urge to clean and organize in order to get the house ready for the new baby. Call in some friends and family members to give you a hand.
11 Back Sleeping
Sleeping when you are pregnant, and in your third trimester becomes almost impossible. You will spend a lot of time trying to get comfortable, and you will spend the rest of the time getting up to go to the bathroom. It is natures way of getting you ready for the erratic sleeping patterns of a newborn, or so they say. This doesn’t bring much joy to a woman’s heart who just wants to get some sleep while she can.
Mom will be desperate to find a position that is comfortable, and she may be tempted to sleep on her back. This can be very dangerous, and it is advised that women who are pregnant do not sleep on their back. What can happen is the weight of the baby will press down on veins that can cut off oxygen. It is always best to sleep on either your left or right side.
10 Holding It In
A common problem in the third trimester is there are frequent trips to the bathroom. This is usually due to the pressure that is being applied to your bladder from the weight of your baby. It is not surprising that mom has to frantically run to the bathroom for only a little to come out. It can be frustrating.
Mom may be tempted to just say ‘no more’ and to hold it in because she knows that she doesn’t really need to go. This is a mistake, and it could be a big one. The problem is that mom is leaving herself open to getting a UTI which can be very painful when pregnant. Not only that, but she also may be leaving herself vulnerable to some leakage when she coughs or sneezes.
9 Refusing Vaccines
Vaccines may not have always been a controversial topic, but they sure are now. Normally the debate has been about vaccinating children, but it is not creeping into whether pregnant women should receive vaccinations during pregnancy. The short answer is that vaccines should be received when a mom is pregnant, especially when they are advised by a doctor.
The two vaccines that are recommended during pregnancy is the flu shot and the TDAP. Pregnant women are more susceptible to the flu because their immune system is weakened during pregnancy. The TDAP is a fairly new encourage vaccine for pregnant women and it offers some protection to the baby before they are able to get their first set of shots.
8 Stop Not Eating!! Seriously!
We stated earlier that the stomach of a woman who is in her third trimester is smaller due to be squished up by the growing baby. This can cause a lot of problems for mom, mostly around digestion. This can make an already uncomfortable situation even more uncomfortable and mom not feel like eating at all. She simply feels like she can not fit anything more in her system.
This is a big mistake, and women need to stop doing it. It may be uncomfortable, but it is important to keep yourself energized with foods. This may mean that mom needs to eat smaller meals, almost snacks, throughout the majority of the day. A lot of women will also turn to smoothies because they find it easier to drink their nutrients.
7 Stop Staying In Bed All Day
Listen, I have been there. I have a toddler and I am currently in the third trimester of a second baby, I actually only have three weeks until my due date. I know how exhausting it can be and how hard it is to get up and actually do anything. It can be very easy to just want to stay in bed all day, and it can happen. The third trimester is exhausting, and it feels like it lasts a lot longer than three months.
The problem is, if you stay in bed all day, it is harder on your body. You may have aches and pains but by getting up and moving around it can actually be better for you bones and muscles.
6 You Are Still Googling?
We live in an age of information and it can lead a lot of people to run to Google when they feel something is wrong. This is wrong for anyone, as you will get an array of opinions and answers, and most of them will just scare you more. Pregnant women do this a lot, especially if this is their first pregnancy. It is done out of worry and they are searching for anything to ease their mind.
In the third trimester, a woman is very aware that labour and childbirth is coming soon. If she has not had a baby before, this is all new to her and she may start looking up signs and symptoms of being in labour. This is not a good idea. It is always best to just ask your doctor and call them if you think you may be in labour.
5 Caring What Other People Think!
You learn very quickly that when you become pregnant there are suddenly a lot of people out there who want to give you their opinions and advice. This can be overwhelming, especially to a first-time mom. They are already unsure of what to do, and all of this advice can make them even more overwhelmed and confused. This is mostly because people tend to give conflicting advice.
One of the most important things you want to stop doing in the third trimester is to stop listening and caring about what other people think. It will take a lot of stress off of you. Thank them and then move on with how you plan on raising this baby.
4 Freaking Out!
This can be very difficult, but it is important to stop freaking out. When childbirth is approaching, it can make anyone on high alert, and this goes both for first-time mom’s and experienced mom’s. You want to spend your last few months, weeks or days doing things that relax you. Enjoy your freedom now.
3 Eating Salty Foods
A common problem in late pregnancy is swelling. Women will find that their feet will often swell, and sometimes this swelling can spread to the face and hands. It is uncomfortable and at times unavoidable but there are things mom can do to try and not make it worse.
There is a long list of foods that women are told to stay away from when they are pregnant, and this doesn’t change in the third trimester. However, additionally mom will want to stay away from foods that are high in salt. Salt can lead to water retention which can make swelling worse which we all want to avoid as much as we can.
2 An Adult Good Time
Now, this one is not a hard and fast rule as there are exceptions. A lot of couple worry about being intimate when they are expecting. As a general rule, if there are no medical conditions or red flags informed to you by your doctor, you and your partner can continue with such activities as normal.
However, when two people enter the third trimester of pregnancy, things change. Being together can become uncomfortable so there are a lot of couple who withstand activities until after the baby is born. The third trimester is also when complications can happen due to the pressure being placed by the baby. Being intimate is also one way that a couple can try and induce labour, so you want to proceed with caution.
1 Put The Pineapple Away!
The rule is that you would have to eat a lot of pineapple in order for it to do anything, but sometimes there are risks that we do not want to take. Pineapple is said to cause the uterus to contract and can induce labour. If mom has reached her due date and still no sign of baby, then go ahead and eat all the pineapple you want.
